American Museum of Natural History launches Climate Change blog and ‘Donate Your Status for Climate Change’ initiative with FaceBook
By Leslie Poston
You probably don’t think of innovation when you think of the American Museum of Natural History. They are working to use social media to change that image, become more competitive in the web 2.0 space, and help effect climate change in the process with the launch of a new Climate Change blog and a FaceBook “Donate Your Status” campaign.
FaceBook “Donate Your Status” campaigns got serious traction during the most recent election when people were able to use their status to promote their chosen candidate. It’s a simple and highly visible way for people to get the word out about a cause, and the American Museum of Natural History is capitalizing on that visibility and each of use to launch its Climate Change initiatives.
The American Museum of Natural History is coming out online in a big way. They now have a FaceBook fan page, a FaceBook page for the Climate Change initiative, a YouTube channel, a Twitter account, a blog, and a Flickr photo stream. The launch (and promotion) of this new fresh online presence is coinciding with their Climate Change Exhibition.
The museum’s full throttle approach to getting the word out about climate change in new and innovative ways is already proving effective as more and more people tune in to each channel to learn about the problem and how we can help offline as well as on. It will be interesting to hear the reports of how people responded to the FaceBook “Donate Your Status” campaign, as that metric can measured in near-real time, and is such a simple one-click way to promote awareness.
The American Museum of Natural History is an old-school property grabbing onto the reigns of new ideas using new social media technology and tools. By using the tools of the future they are showing us how to solve the problems leftover from the past. That is the right way to bring social media and technology into play to effect offline change.
