Golden Shellback waterproofing for iPods, Blackberrys now available
By Jonathan Schlaffer
If you are prone to dropping your electronics or like using them in areas where water can splash on them this may be for you. A company called Golden Shellback is offering to use a rather unique process to waterproof your precious device.
The coating is described as follows,
Golden Shellbackcoating produces a vacuum deposited film that is nonflammable, has low toxicity and has the ability to weatherproof electronic devices and other surfaces. It contains no volatile organic combustibles (VOCs). The clear, nearly non-detectable, uniform film is insoluble in solvents. When applied to clean, moisture free surfaces, such as plastic, copper, aluminum, metal, ceramic, steel, tin or glass, the coating is transparent with excellent weather proofing and anti-corrosion properties.
The coating has an excellent ability to repel oils, synthetic fluids, hazardous materials, dust, dirt and water based solutions. Low surface tension values, such as water and oils will bead and drain freely from coated surfaces. The process produces a uniform, continuous, near hermetic coating that resists rain and humidity. Electronics casually exposed to water continue to work even after exposure. The coating is readily applied and not generally considered to be removable. Repairs are made using abrasive methods.
In theory any device could have the coating applied ranging from laptops to cell phones, perhaps even monitors. So far the following devices can be sent to them for coating,
Blackberry Pearl $120.00 per unit coated
Apple IPod Shuffle $60.00 per unit coated
Apple IPod Touch $120.00 per unit coated
Lansing IPod Speaker Orbit M $60.00 per unit coated
Garmin GPS etrex $75.00 per unit coated
West Marine Vhf 55 Radio $120.00 per unit coated
Speakers (no enclosures) up to 8 inches in diameter $100 each $180 pair
Sounds good doesn’t it? While there are videos of the coating in action, the warranty leaves a little to be desired. Devices coated are guaranteed to be weatherproof for a period of 30 days and full submersion in water is not covered. Which I thought was the whole point of getting it.
If Goden Shellback wants to attract some more customers give a longer warranty, say 90 days and cover some full submersion as the videos have demonstrated.
