Twitter buys I Want Sandy and Stikkit when Rael Dornfest joins team

November 28, 2008

If you are anything like me, you have been using (and have adored) the applications I Want Sandy and Stikkit from Oregon company values of n. Now that Rael Dornfest, founder of values of n, has joined the Twitter team, you can kiss those two useful applications goodbye, at least for now.

Twitter announced that as of now, they would be acquiring both applications as part of the new structure, and that users should find other alternatives for their needs until future notice. If you are a user of values of n applications and new to Twitter, let me assure that “future notice” may mean a while, and the end product as integrated with Twitter may not be what you expect at all – look what Twitter did to poor Summize.

I Want Sandy is (or perhaps was) a Web 2.0 based “virtual assistant” program. Incredibly useful for keeping track of everything a freelancer might need to organize their day, I Want Sandy was a favorite of freelancers. What other personal productivity tool may take its place is up for grabs. You can combine programs like Remember The Milk and others to fill some of the needs, but I Want Sandy was more of a one stop shop. IT will be interesting to see how this looks down the road when (or if) it is integrated into Twitter.

Stikkit is one that can be replaced, I think, by Evernote (and in fact, it has been replaced by Evernote for me). The value of integrating it into Twitter may be neat, but frankly, I’d rather see Evernote add a Twitter Note to its list of potential notes you can send to the service instead. This little app may be going the way of the dodo bird, so users should prepare for a new way to jot themselves notes.

Rael Dornfest has joined Twitter as a “full time Twitter engineer”. That’s good news for Twitter users who hope to see beloved features like Track and IM return, and for new users who long for more functionality. He has proven he can write useful, working applications that have a short learning curve. Meanwhile, prepare to say goodbye, at least for now, to I Want Sandy and Stikkit as of Dec. 8, 2008.
