Land Rover and Sonim Technologies partner to create Land Rover cell phones Instead of Eddie Bauer Ford Explorers, you will soon be able to get Land Rover cell phones.  Some car brands transfer to other items and some store brands to cars.  In this case, Land Rover wanted to be able to offer its customers rugged accessories starting with cell phones.

Sonim Technologies already offers a line of rugged cell phones, the Xtreme Performance One (XP1) and the Xtreme Performance Three (XP3).  These phones are made to hold up in extraordinary circumstances and Sonim provides the videos to prove it.  The videos are world wide and show Sonim XP phones undergoing amazing torture and still working.

The phones are stepped on by elephants, dropped from the top of two story buildings, run over by cars, SUV’s and Mac trucks, dropped in fish tanks, soaked in beer and baked in an oven.  After all of these extreme endurance tests, the phone will still make and receive calls.

It is because of the endurance and durability of Sonim’s phones that Land Rover signed an exclusive contract with Sonim to produce Land Rover branded phones.  Land Rovers are known for being rugged off-road vehicles and soon Land Rover owners will be able to buy a phone that will match Land Rover’s rugged outdoor reputation.

The first two cell phones, the Land Rover S1 and Land Rover S2 G4, are due by mid 2009 and a third cell phone, as yet unnamed, will arrive later in 2009.  All three phones will be manufactured by Sonim to meet the rugged requirements of Land Rover customers.

Unfortunately, for both Land Rover and Sonim, Reuters is reporting that two more major cell phone companies, LG and RIM are following Nokia and Samsung’s dire predictions of a contraction in cell phone sales that will continue into 2009.

Land Rover and Sonim may have a hard time next year introducing new cell phones into a shrinking market.  It is unclear whether Land Rover and Sonim can produce a cell phone that is rugged enough to survive the ongoing bear market.
