Google rolls out full search ads on iPhone, G1

December 8, 2008

Google rolls out full search ads on iPhone, G1Apple’s iPhone and the HTC/T-Mobile/Google G1 have arguably the closest things to full web-browsing mobile phones. Unfortunately, having one’s cake and eating it too isn’t an option for users of such phones, as Google has announced the roll-out of full search ads for full mobile browsers just today.

Alexandra Kenin over at the Google Mobile Blog announced today that Google is doing advertisers a solid favor by opening up a new venue of full-html browser handsets on which advertisers can run full search ads. Instead of running limited advertisements like those on non-full html handsets, advertisers can now better direct advertising in its full glory to users of handsets like the G1 or iPhone.

As more handsets transition to full html browsers, undoubtedly advertisers would like to abandon ad campaigns that are structured around limited mobile handsets. Really, the widespread adoption of full-html browsing capable handsets simply translates to less money being spent on one-dimensional advertising campaigns targeted towards mobile phones. And at a time when money is tight, it’s pretty obvious advertisers will be cheering for consumers to pick up such handsets.

I suppose if you take a positive outlook on this announcement, you can look forward to better advertising to which you can run if you’re looking to spend oodles of money this holiday season, assuming you’re the owner of one such full-html handset. On the flip side, you really shouldn’t have expected anything less. If you’re like me, you’ve learned to overlook the advertising and go about your business.

I am really interested to see whether or not advertising can be coupled with the GPS capabilities of both handsets in question to delivery eerily-relevant advertising to consumers based upon their exact locations. Obviously such a thing would have creepy privacy infringement implications, but it might not be far from implementation if Google and the other gods of advertising get their ways.
