Stephen Fry follows up Blackberry comments with Vista rant
By Dave Parrack
Stephen Fry went on a rampage at the end of November, ripping into the RIM Blackberry Storm, and laughing in the face of the iPhone Killer claims. And he’s now at it again, ripping Vista a new hole while also laying into the Sony Vaio and the state of the PC market in general. The man clearly has anger issues.
Stephen Fry is a comedian, television presenter, and host of the popular panel show, QI. He is also the former comedic partner of Hugh Laurie, a man who is now more popular in the U.S than Barack Obama, thanks to the hit TV show, House. But Fry also has another claim to fame – being a gadget killer extraordinaire.
Fry is a well-known Apple Machead, being the second person in the UK to ever own one, being beaten only by Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy. He’s also a huge fan of the iPhone. In essence, he loves Steve Jobs and company with a passion.
Last month saw Fry make some very harsh comments about the RIM Blackberry Storm. He used Twitter to call the new phone “shockingly bad” and “embarrassingly awful”. And now he’s once again used the micro-blogging service to vent his frustration at a piece of technology, with Windows Vista and the Sony Vaio this time being the target of his venting spleen.
Here’s Fry’s Twitter stream in full:
I hate Vista so much I want to cry. Bought a Vaio. The most useless $4k ever spent. It just will not join a sec-enabled network. HOW????
The network is there. I press to join it doesn’t even ask for a password! It just can’t join. How insultingly dreadful can software be?
I have nine macs!!!!!! I don’t need another f**king mac. I just want ONE ARSING PC that isn’t complete S**T
Too late. It’s going out the window. I can’t put up with this sort of arse.
Listen I have parallels, I have fusion, I have 2 distros of Linux. I need just one, just 1 of c**ting Vista so that I can review things
Forgive intemperate language, but every time I buy a PC they’re worse, not better than they were before and it make me so angry I could kill
How can I review certain PC only things if I don’t have one? Anyway, I’ve calmed down now. Vista and PCs are so crap it’s funny x
Wow, there’s one man I wouldn’t like to get on the wrong side of. But does he have a point? I mean, most of us would agree that Vista is worse than Windows XP. How did that happen? Isn’t technology meant to improve over time? I’m not a fan of Apple or Macs, but I have to agree with Fry that PCs seem to be getting worse not better.
Obviously Stephen Fry isn’t going to kill of PCs or Windows Vista (unfortunately) with this tirade. But it’s entertaining nonetheless, seeing a middle-aged man trying to cope with the utter crappiness of new technology. The fact he then spits bile on Twitter as it happens just makes me love the man, and Twitter, even more than I already did.
As John Lister suggests, why doesn’t Apple employ this man to rant about Microsoft in a commercial? It could make me think twice about buying a Vista-enabled PC.

More power to your elbow Stephen!
If the developers refuse to listen to ‘ordinary’ people then maybe a blast from a comic genius will reach their ears a little better (or at least the bad publicity cause pause for thought).
Fundamantally he is correct, easy & intiutive operation ought to be an increasingly common part of PC ownership, all too often it isn’t.
(but I do get along just fine with my XP PC)

Microsoft dropped the ball long time ago. I miss the old DOS days.
