YouTube adds Unique View tracking for videos
By Emily Price
Ever wonder if your mom is the only one watching your YouTube video…100,000 times? YouTube has released a new features for their analytics program that not only lets you see how many times your video has been viewed, it also shows you how many unique views your videos have gotten.
Keeping track of how many views your video has gotten is nothing new. The amount of page views a video gets has been pretty obvious on the site for some time. Adding the unique views function, however, puts the whole thing a little more in perspective.
While a certain video might have ten times the amount of views of another similar video on the site, a good bit of those could be from the exact same people who just happen to like the video enough to watch it over and over and over again. Some aspiring YouTube celebrities are more than likely not above hitting that refresh button and playing their own personal videos over and over again as well just to drive up those numbers.
Likewise it could be interesting to see how many people found your own personal video interesting enough to watch it over and over again rather than move on top something new on the site. While it’s relatively easy to score a single view from a person on your video, it would be neat to see what video average three or four view (or even more) per person.
Unique views can be accessed on YouTube via the YouTube Insights page for a particular video. Once on the page click “Show Unique Users” under the tab marked “Views” and you should be taken to a graph showing the unique viewers for a particular video against the absolute views, you can also check out how people found the video in question and the demographics of the viewers in the same place. Pretty interesting stuff.
