OLPC ad features John Lennon
A new charity advertisement is running, featuring the long-dead Beatle John Lennon. The ad is for the One Laptop Per Child organization, and was approved by Yoko Ono, Lennon’s widow.
The ad started running Christmas Day. It was made using state-of-the-art digital technology, and features the image and voice of Lennon speaking to the tune of Imagine, one of his most popular songs. It is a 30-second spot and can be seen on the One Laptop Per Child Website or on YouTube. It is called A message From John Lennon. The Beatle’s voice has been simulated by an imitator. In Lennon’s voice, the ad promotes the impact that would be had if the foundation’s objective came true and every child had a laptop.
The One Laptop Per Child Association, Inc. (OLPC) is a U.S. non-profit organization set up to oversee the creation of an affordable educational device for use in the developing world. Its mission is “To create educational opportunities for the world’s poorest children by providing each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning.”
Lennon is featured on the video, saying “”Imagine every child could access a universe of knowledge. They would have a chance to learn, to dream, to achieve anything they want. I tried to do it through my music, but now you can do it in a very different way. You can give a child a laptop and more than imagine. You … can change the world.”
Nicholas Negroponte, founder and chairman of One Laptop per Child, said “John Lennon’s vision of a better world aligns perfectly with the mission of One Laptop per Child. We deeply appreciate Yoko Ono’s support in allowing us to create the spot and we hope that its message will get people to imagine the power of education to change the world.” The statement was issued by the charity organization, according to a story by Reuters.
