Food delivery service to merge with Wii video game console
By Mike Ferro
Nintendo recently announced that the company will be looking to integrate video and food services into the Wii. The Wii is Nintendo’s latest video game console with Internet capability. There is a growing trend of merging technologies as seen with Sony’s PS3 and Microsoft Xbox 360.
As time progresses one pattern that seems evident is that technologies will continue to merge and integrate with each other. With camera and music functionality merged together, cellphones are a prime example. Another emergence that is evident is the central home media hub.
Sony launched the PS3 which is a video game console and a Blu-ray player. Sony also has a video rental/purchase service in place through the PS3’s online store. Microsoft also recently announced the Netflix service on the Xbox 360 for movie rentals. It seems that Nintendo is taking it one step further by not only offer a movie service, but food ordering service from the Wii.
According to 1Up, this new service will allow consumers to browse through a “Food Delivery Channel” and order from a variety of selection. There will also be a “roulette mode” that will randomly find a place to order food from. Pretty soon, consumers will not only be able to play games, but order food and watch videos, all from the Nintendo Wii.
Apparently this service will be launching in spring of 2009 in Japan. According to Nintendo, the company will be looking to expand the service into foreign markets in the future. I recently started ordering Pizza through the Internet and it is a bit more convenient when considering how error-prone ordering over the phone is. I can definitely see myself using the food delivery service once it comes out in the US on the Wii. Till then, we will just have to pick up the phone and order the good old fashioned way.
