Voicetag brings voicemail to Facebook
By Emily Price
Voicetag is a new application that allows you to send voicemail messages to your friends on Facebook. The application can send the same message to a group of people, or a personalized message to single recipient. What makes the application unique is that it incorporates your regular phone in the process and SMS messaging.
Working the application is pretty straightforward. You decide whom you want to send a magical message to, and add a text message (if you feel like you need to text and send a voicemail at the same time). After you select your recipients you give Voicetag a number that you can be reached at, and the application calls you on the phone to allow you to record your voice message. Once recorded to your satisfaction you message is sent to your intended recipients via SMS and Facebook. Recipients of a Voicetag message can then listen to what you’ve sent via their browser.
The application is currently free to use and just requires that you install the application on Facebook.
The idea behind the application is a pretty good one. I’m personally a big fan of the ability to leave your message via the actual telephone rather than having to use the microphone on your computer. For some reason the microphone on a computer never sounds as good as a telephone (no matter how crappy your handset it) and if you’re in a public place you’ll look much less like a doof leaving a message into your cell phone than you will talking aimlessly into your laptop.
Emails can often be misinterpreted (since people can’t hear the tone in your voice) so it could be nice to send someone a voicemail message letting them know your thoughts on a subject when you think the text version might potentially come off the wrong way.
