LG introduces a 3G HDSPA wrist phone

By Emily Price

Move over James Bond – LG has introduced a new 3G HSDPA wrist phone to rival the greatest of spy gadgets. The phone has support for both 3G and HSDPA technologies and is expected to be officially debuted next month at CES in Las Vegas.

The watch (LG-GD910) has a 1.43-inch color LCD touchscreen, with an integrated video camera for those times you want to videoconference through your wristwatch. The phone packs quite a punch in its small package with text-to-speech capabilities, Bluetooth, MP3 playback, voice dialing with speech recognition, and download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps when using HDSPA.The wrist phone is expected to be available first in European and Korean markets with no word on pricing or an official release date for the device.

These types of devices always fascinate me when they’re announced. This phone by LG isn’t the first wrist phone we’ve seen hit the market, but it is one of the first that has been released by such a big manufacturer. While most of them previous similar releases could be brushed off as for the most part garbage, this one more than likely is going to built to be a pretty decent phone.

The wrist phones are always neat to look at, but they need really seem like they’re all that practical either. I can’t think of a time (expect those when you just want to look cool) where answering a call on your watch would be appropriate. Video conferencing on the phone, while it sounds cool in theory, would more than likely is a huge pain to actually pull off from your wrist.

The wrist phones could have some usability with a Bluetooth headset, but still the whole idea just seems like it would be more awkward than functional. What do you think? Could you see yourself using a wrist phone as your primary cell phone?

    1. Ken:

This falls into the same box as the first web browsing cell phones in the late 90’s, painful and worthless for 99% of people.

If you have any bluetooth enabled phone and headset, unless you aspire for dorkhood, pretty worthless.
