Acer and Intel bring quad-core to the notebook

December 30, 2008

Acer and Intel bring quad-core to the notebook Acer’s launched a new notebook to showcase Intel’s latest mobile quad-core processor. The processor in question is the Intel© Core™2 Quad Mobile Processor Q9000.

According to the release, the Aspire 8930G-7665 notebook is optimized for gaming multimedia. Of course there’s the standard PR fluff about how the notebook “combines superior computing power, innovative technology and productivity features, with stylish PC design”.

For processor buffs, the new chip has 6MB of shared L2 cache, a 1066 MHz Front Side Bus with clock speed rates up to 2.0 GHz. Having a quad-core processor is nice, but it will depend on the software. Older software might not necessarily be able to make use of the multithreading capability of the quad-core, with any improvements seen likely on the operating system side.

What other sweetness lies under the hood of this machine? There’s a decent 18.40-inch HD CineCrystal™ widescreen display, at 1920 x 1080 resolution. Standard 16:9 aspect ratio here, as well as Blu-ray, NVIDIA® GeForce® 9700M GT graphics and Dolby® audio.

“By incorporating the latest capabilities of Intel’s Core™ 2 Quad mobile processors into the Aspire 8930G-7665, Acer is delivering a perfect combination of mobility, innovation and extreme gaming capabilities,” said Sumit Agnihotry, vice president of product marketing for Acer America. “Gamers and enthusiasts who enjoy HD multimedia entertainment will find the performance benefits of quad core mobile performance in the Aspire 8930G unrivalled to other multimedia notebooks on the market.”
