It would probably cost you more to buy a new power supply and have it installed than to have a computer technician pull your data off your hard drive and burn it to a cd for you.

Then I would donate it to a recycle organization.

I have an old desktop (about 9yrs now) that I bought when I lived in Australia. After about 3 yrs use, it wouldn't come on anymore, and then if it did, it shut off on its own after a couple of minutes.

I got a different computer, but kept this one because there is a lot of stuff (documents/pictures) on there that I want to keep .... so now I am back in Canada, and I figure it's time get at that data.

So ... besides the fact that this has a power supply for Australia, AND it doesn't work anyway, is getting a new power supply the way to go?

I was thinking I might be able to get a used one somewhere, since there are probably many old desktops that were discarded for reasons other than a faulty power supply.

What do you think?

I got a DELL XPS 420 desktop with a PSU of 375 wattage. I want to upgrade to a better Video Card, some I've seen require more than 400 Watts on PSU, some even require 600 watts. I was told by Dell that the most higher I could get was 425 watts. I wanted to make sure they were telling the truth or just trying to sell me one for $109.00 Would you please tell me if I could get a more powerful PSU without risking to damage my computer or if in fact Dell representative was right? If I can get a more powerfull one or the best for my PC I can get for a better price, is there any size difference that I should be aware of before buying it? What else should I look for? Any recommendations? Thank you for your response and for your time!
