Motorola announces the new W233 Renew green phone

Thin phones, tiny phones, touch phones, now green phones.  Pick a phone, any phone but there is currently only one carbon-neutral phone, the Moto W233 Renew announced by Motorola.

I guess Obama’s theme of a “green technology” economy has trickled down to unusual green items.  Wind turbines, solar panels, and geothermal energy are your basic green items.  Specialized clothes, organic food, and high tech energy saving homes are also green.  Now there is Motorola’s W233 Renew that is carbon neutral through Motorola’s alliance with Carbonfund.org.

The Moto W233 Renew is made out of recycled water bottles.  Motorola has agreed to offset the carbon dioxide from the manufacturing, distribution and operation of the phone by working through Carbonfund.org to invest in renewable energy sources and reforestation.

According to Motorola, using recycled water bottles to make these phones uses 20 percent less energy than manufacturing regular cell phone housings and makes the housing of the W233 Renew 100 percent recyclable.  Of course that doesn’t make the electronics inside completely recyclable but one step at a time.

Motorola has even extended the green factor to the packaging of the W233 by using 100 percent post consumer waste and reducing the size of the box.  A further green step is the use of vegetable-based inks for the box and all of the accompanying print materials.  The company even includes a self-addressed, postage-paid envelop so that you can send your old phone back to Motorola for recycling.

Besides the nifty green factor the W233 renew does actually function as phone.  It gets nine hours of talk time, and eighteen days of standby time.  The phone works on GSM networks with CrystalTalk technology and with optional two gigabyte removable memory.

The Moto W233 Renew is due out in the first quarter of 2009 so if you want to be able to say even your phone has gone green, then you should be able to snap it soon.
