Dish Networks DVR and Slingbox: Together at last

By Dave Jeyes

United at last In an unholy union of two Echostar offspring, Dish Networks new DVR set top boxes will include Sling Media’s Internet streaming technology.  The incestuous dealings will allow Dish Networks customers to view recorded video from another room, the Web or even a mobile phone.

Dish Network is expected to unveil the HD DVR with Slingbox technology later today at the Consumer Electronics Show. The set top box is called the Vip 922 and no release date has been announced yet.

Sling Media is a division of Echostar Corp that started selling set top boxes back in 2005. The Slingbox will stream video to any Internet-connected device within the home or from elsewhere.

Dish Network is the third largest premium television provider in the US with over 13 million subscribers across the country. The company announced back in May that it would be integrating Slingbox technology into its DVRs, but this is the first we’ve seen.

Sling Media has been gaining momentum this year with a number of product releases. The company announced its SlingCatcher set top box in October as a way to make television programming in another room in the house.

In addition to Mac and PC clients, Sling also has clients for mobile phones. The mobile client currently runs on Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Palm and Symbian phones.

Sling also announced earlier in the week that it is preparing a sleek new version of its mobile software for the iPhone. The client hasn’t been released, but the company did give a preview earlier this week at the Macworld conference.

Now Dish Networks customers will have the option to watch programming from nearly any device, anywhere they happen to be. This could be a huge draw for many that are reconsidering their television provider as long as it’s not too pricey.
