Barack Obama’s inauguration – White House Web site evolves

By Dave Parrack

While Barack Hussein Obama was being inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States of America, a huge change was occurring on the WhiteHouse.gov Web site, the official virtual home of the President. Obama’s inauguration speech promised inclusion a welcoming hand for all. Will his Web site deliver on that score as well?

The whole world seemed to be watching America on Jan. 20, 2009, to see Barack Obama become the new President of the U.S.A., and the first black person to achieve such high office in the States. This freezing cold day will surely go down as an important one on history, whether or not Obama’s aims ring true.

While most of us were glued to our television sets or PCs watching Obama’s inauguration via one of the multitude of channels and streams providing it, the President’s New Media team were busy updating the WhiteHouse.gov Web site. At the stroke of Noon, those eight years of Bush disappeared to be replaced by the start of Obama’s reign as the leader of the free world.

Macon Phillips, Obama’s Director of New Media for the White House, spells out what the incoming President wants to achieve with the new-look site. The biggest immediate change is the inclusion of a blog, which is where Phillips posts his rundown of how Obama’s new media plans stack up.

There are apparently three priorities being targeted for the online side of Obama’s time at the White House: Communication, Transparency, and Participation. But they all point towards a similar goal, which is bringing citizens back into the loop and empowering them like never before.

As well as the (hopefully) regularly updated blog, there are going to be emailed updates, and The Briefing Room which is going to be home to press releases, photos, and videos (some of which can be downloaded). But while these are all one-way traffic, Obama’s team also wants feedback from all of us, well not me because I’m British, but you know what I mean.

When Obama was campaigning for office, he connected with people like no other candidate I’ve seen before. And it looks as though this trend of listening to the public isn’t going to end now that he’s finally entered the White House. I already thought Obama was the most in touch world leader around but the new White House Web site looks to extend that idea even further.
