Netbooks the next big thing
By Gareth Powell
This is written on a Netbook. When I fly in aircraft, which I do a lot, every other person seems to have a Netbook. The price in Pan Thip Plaza in Bangkok, Thailand are now down to $200. In a sense, if we are to believe forecasts, they will rule the computer world.
ABI Research says it expects worldwide shipments of netbooks to reach 35 million units this year. Trusting research companies and their figures is normally an act of gross folly but this time there seems to be something in it. ABI writes that a confluence of social and technological factors has created a kind of perfect storm that will lead to a market explosion. Which sound like Victorian melodrama.
Kevin Burden of ABI quoted in TGDaily said, “PDA’s began our reliance on instant accessible data while traveling. When IDA functionality converged with cellular voice, smartphones became the new darling of mobile professional technology that many expected to evolve into the hub for all data and communication needs for traveling professionals.”
If one could but understand what he is rabbiting on about I am sure we would agree. Whatever. The netbook has become the darling of the traveling classes. And with a keyboard, a mouse and a big screen plugged in it may very, very seriously affect the sale of notebooks and, perhaps, desktops.
