Filter your Tweets with Filttr

By Emily Price

If you spend a lot of time on Twitter, chances are over time you’ve decided to follow quite a few people. If those people (or organizations for that matter) have started to get a bit overwhelming, then a new service called Filttr may be just what you need.

Filttr, which is right out of closed beta, is a service designed to filter all the tweets you are receiving through an algorithm the site has called FLAI (Filttr Artifical Intelligence). Theoretically the service is able to go through all the tweets you receive and decide what tweets it thinks you’ll actually be interested in.

You can rate your friends within the service, letting it for instance know you would rather read tweets from your friends Charles, than what your favorite Web site is up to. You can also create a custom blacklist or whitelist for tweets. For instance you can say you always want to read tweets about LOST, or you can opt to blacklist the phrase and keep LOST tweets (at least those with the word in the tweet) from coming. The list can be constantly changed, so you can filter out tweets about a particular event while it’s going on, and then put them back after it’s over.

The service also has its own desktop application to help you manage your Twitter account, as well as IM support and a mobile interface.

The whole idea behind the service is pretty good, and if everything works the way it should (again-it just got out of closed beta) then it definitely is a contender to be one of those “must-haves” for extensive Twitter users.

There are currently quite a few different Twitter services out there. Which ones are your favorites? What made you decide to use one service over another? What would you like to see added to Filttr?

Sounds like a useful feature, though I’d like to see one which worked in reverse and allowed you to post a Tweet only viewable by a certain group of followers (eg work colleagues, clients, personal friends, family, people who share a hobby).

John, there are a few programs that let you do just that. I would start looking into Tweetdeck to start and I’m sure you’ll find a few new ones as I post this!
