Is there really a Google GDrive?

January 30, 2009

Rumors have been floating around the blogosphere for a few weeks about something called the Google GDrive. Further reports are making the Google device in the sky hard to ignore.

The rumors have been giving the alleged device a shadowy shape. It has been said to be a cloud computing device for consumers, a place where users could store their files in safety and work on them with a variety of devices. The GDrive has even been seen as yet another harbinger of doom for the PC itself, although that is certainly premature.

Now a basic description of the GDrive has been found in a piece of Google software, as reported by CNET. The snippet was found in the Google Pack Software bundle, a package intended to help Windows users find and run software from Google. In a section which carries descriptions of the various components being offered by Google, the following GDrive description was found:

Online file backup and storage … GDrive provides reliable storage for all of your files, including photos, music and document. GDrive allows you to access your files from anywhere, anytime, and from any device – be it from your desktop, Web browser or cellular phone.

A description like that, and from inside the Google machine itself, may well be enough to cement the rumors into an actual product. Past rumors pointed to such a device, such as one started by a less complete description in a new release of Picassa. That description was confirmed in a general way, but was removed from the Picassa package the next day.

With the amount of interest generated by every move it makes, Google has a very hard time hiding anything from its users. Every part of every release and document is scrutinized for any hint of something new. The GDrive is apparently another instance where users will keep watch until the truth is known. With that in mind, it is likely that the good folks at Google will have something to say on this matter sooner than later.
