Presidents of the USA iPhone app shows the way forward
The Presidents of The USA may no longer be the big name they once were, but their back catalog of music is now available on an iPhone application that could show the way forward for the music industry.
The music industry, in the shape of the big four record labels, sees the Internet and Web distribution as the biggest threat to its well being ever envisioned. That’s why ever since Napster entered stage right, the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has been trying to take the platform down, and it doesn’t care how it does it, or who it takes down in the process.
The problem is, while the music industry, as a whole, seeks to maintain an already dead business model, the world is moving on and embracing new ways of buying, selling, and otherwise distributing content. As the current case against The Pirate Bay shows, content owners aren’t giving up without a fight, but while they fight a losing battle, some clear thinkers are trying new ways of reaching an audience.
The Presidents of The United States of America, as well as being a group of men who have run a country, are a band from Seattle that had success in the early nineties. The lead singer, Dave Dederer, has since gone on to get involved with the music streaming market, and according to Wired, his company, Melodeo, has recently released a new iPhone app.
‘The Presidents’ Music – PUSA’ is now available on the App Store for the princely sum of $2.99. For that, you get all four PUSA albums that the band own the rights too. The whole back catalog, as well as some rarities, can be streamed over the Internet and listened to whenever and wherever you want via your iPhone.
So what, right? Sure, PUSA aren’t big now, and their music is unlikely to ever feature near the top of the iTunes sales charts, but that’s not the point. A band’s whole back catalog for $2.99? That’s a bargain right there. And due to the music being streamed rather than downloaded, PUSA don’t have to worry about their songs being instantly uploaded to a file-sharing site or made available as a torrent.
I’ve been using Spotify every day for almost two months now, and I love it. I haven’t spent anything yet thanks to advertising, I’ve been able to listen to (almost) all of my favorite music being streamed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And the Presidents’ iPhone app is further proof that this new way of delivering music can work.
