Are Yahoo and Carol Bartz meshing?

March 1, 2009

Carol Bartz has been on the job as Yahoo CEO for about 45 days and has already made a number of changes near the top. How well will those high-level moves translate into transforming the company as a whole?

Bartz has decidedly been busy, and would seem to be doing all of the right things. She has talked to hundreds of company employees, especially corporate executives, to learn exactly what Yahoo is. She has had time to figure out what is wrong with the giant search-and-portal company. Finally, she has reorganized Yahoo in an attempt to put it on a new (and better) course. Now, all that remains to be seen is if the company itself changes.

Yahoo, as a company, and all of its employees have to be suffering from PRSD – Post Reorganization Stress Disorder. The company has been restructured, reorganized, and re-constituted so many times lately that being shaken up has to seem more normal than being settled down. It is safe to say that the company has been in significant turmoil for some time.

Bartz has been working to make the company simpler in order to make it work more efficiently, according to a CNET article. She has done that primarily by cleaning up the corporate chain of command in order to make information flow better inside the company and to shorten corporate decision times. The company itself had already been reorganized into a neater structure during previous overhauls.

Essentially, Bartz’s learning and planning stages have been completed. It is now time to start the heavy lifting, which in this case is getting the entire corporation, together with all of it employees, onto the newly charted corporate course. The employees are almost certainly weary of the culture of controversy and constant change that has been the hallmark of Yahoo for well over a year. They are tired of proxy fights, buyout offers, and worrying about who they will be working for tomorrow, if anybody. Bartz is certainly bold and brash. Time will tell if she is the leader that Yahoo needs at this time in its history.
