Treehuggers may get .eco domain of their own
A new group called Dot Eco LLC applied to create a new top level domain for individuals to express their support for environmental causes, for companies to promote their environmental initiatives, and for environmental organizations to maintain their web Sites. Let’s not forget: to rake in a huge pile of cash.
The creation of new top level domains has slowed in recent years. This is most likely because there isn’t that much demand for domains ending with .biz, .mobi or .whatever-else.
Dot Eco LLC has a plan to take advantage of the zeitgeist around the environment and boom of green products and services on the Web by charging for new domain names. The company has partnered with Al Gore to promote the idea with the environmentally conscious set.
The initiative’s advisory board consists of Hollywood types such as the Director of An Inconvenient Truth and actor Roger Moore. Dot Eco LLC is being led by CEO Fred Krueger, formerly the founder of Tagworld.com, a social networking site he sold to Viacom Media.
Krueger doesn’t have a terribly green background, preferring to make his money building and selling Web businesses. Funny, that sounds almost precisely like what he’s looking to do here.
There are already a slew of green Web sites online using .com and .org domain names as appropriate. What benefit is there in mixing the nonprofit organizations with the green gold rushers?
If this move is approved, many of these green sites will feel compelled to buy a second domain name to protect their namespace. They also wouldn’t want to appear as if they’re not supporting ‘the cause.’
However, the result of this cause is likely to be more servers in a data center somewhere soaking up electricity and raking in the cash for Krueger and company. Or maybe this could result in a Hollywood blockbuster where Al Gore and his Dot Eco friends crusade to fight global warming and sell merchandise.

Absolutely, I agree, dot eco domain names will be a complete waste of time.
This ridiculous idea is just another money making scheme with no benefit to the environment at all.
In true tree-hugger spirit I have posted a nice picture on my blog in protest of the dot eco TLD, which I think I will have made into a sign so I can don a big pole, strip off naked and dance around outside ICANNs head office shouting “SAY NO to E-C-O!”

I have just posted a rant on my blog, with a nice little picture too I might add, which I’m planned to have made into a banner, strip off naked and dance around outside the headquarters of ICANN chanting “SAY NO to E-C-O” in true tree-hugger fashion
This is just a money making scheme that will provide no real benefit to the environment…
Maybe Al Gore should consider the repercussions of the massive carbon foot print and monetary resources that it takes to launch and sponsor a TLD…
What a crap idea

I like your style, but I’d much prefer it if you would recruit someone a bit, uh, fairer for the naked pole-dancing.
And take video. Please.
