MSI U110 ECO netbook keeps ticking for nine hours
MSI has just released the world’s most energy efficient netbook in the U110 ECO that can run on its battery for up to nine hours at a time. This means no more being tethered to the power outlet and the smugness of knowing that your netbook is more eco-friendly than everyone else’s.
MSI just announced the U110 ECO as a more energy efficient version of its current U115 netbook. The U110 manages to conserve battery life for longer than the U115 without sacrificing on features or storage capacity.
The MSI U110 ECO has a fairly MSI-standard Intel Atom 533MHz processor with 1 GB of RAM. It has a 10″ display just as the other netbooks in the Wind line-up.
One interesting thing to note is that the MSI U110 ECO doesn’t sacrifice on hard drive space. Instead of using a solid state flash drive to save energy, the ECO can come with an 80 to 160 GB SATA hard drive and still manages to conserve energy.
It’s amazing that MSI has managed to make such an energy-efficient laptop considering these features. Other netbook makers like Asus and Acer offer 9″ screens and smaller flash drives that still can’t match the U110 ECO’s 9 hour battery life.
Netbooks have gained hugely in popularity in the past year or so. At the end of last year, netbook makers buoyed overall PC sales to keep hardware sales flat for the year.
The smaller notebook computers are a less expensive choice than a traditional laptop computer and offer increased mobility. It’s not clear yet whether netbook sales can continue to hold up the computer hardware market through 2009.
It’s curious that MSI has not introduced a 9″ model to compete with the low end of the netbook market. Currently the leaders in low-end netbooks are Asus’ EeePC 9″ versions and the Acer Aspire One.
