104-year-old Ivy Bean – the oldest Twitter user in the world
Who’s the oldest person you know on Twitter? 50? 60? Try 104, the age of what is believed to be the oldest Twitter user in the world. Her name is Ivy Bean and whether she’s joined the micro-blogging site of her own accord or just done so at the bequest of journalists looking for a story doesn’t matter – she’s still brilliant.
Last August a woman by the name of Ivy Bean became something of an Internet phenomenon by joining Facebook at the ripe old age of 103. Now, she’s had a resurgence in popularity and press coverage by joining the new darling of the social media world, Twitter. Except she’s now 104-years-old.
The British tabloid newspaper, The Sun, broke the story of how Bean, 104-years-old (not 103 as it suggests) joined Twitter after getting bored of Facebook. How you can get bored of Facebook when you’ve amassed almost 5,000 friends is beyond me but then I’m not 104-years-old, so what do I know?
Bean lives in the Hillside Manor care home in Bradford, West Yorkshire, where she apparently isn’t alone in trying to keep up with new technology. Other residents (inmates) have been on computer courses while others often play a frame of ten-pin bowling on their Nintendo Wii.
Bean’s first tweet to the outside world was, “I’m enjoying Twitter and having my photo taken — and I’m looking forward to Deal Or No Deal.” Since then she has posted every few hours with news including how she’s playing Connect 4 with her friend Mabel and watching The Sound Of Music. These interesting insights into the life of a centurion has nabbed her over 5,000 followers in the space of two days. Ashton Kutcher better watch his back.
There is some dubiousness as to how and why Ivy Bean came to join Twitter. MG Siegler at TechCrunch suggests the whole thing was set up by newspaper journalists in need of some Digg bait. And maybe that’s true, although the fact she is still updating suggests she is actually interested after the fact. But does it actually matter? Here is a lady older than anyone we know and she’s on Twitter! I think that should be celebrated.
