Blu-ray revenue up 119% while DVD is down 13% – is BD taking over?
The Blu-ray format’s adoption rate has been on the climb for the past two years after its battle with HD-DVD. The format has been quickly picking ups steam matching perditions that sales would double within this year. It also seems like the format is eating away at DVD sales as revenue has dropped while Blu-ray has exploded.
Last month I talked about the latest report indicating that Blu-ray (BD) movie sales have indeed doubled as predicted by many analysts. Bill Hunt from Digital bits even indicated that Blu-ray (BD) may take a slight hit from the state of the economy but is still way ahead of VHS adoption rate. It doesn’t seem like the DB format has taken that much of a hit as sales keep climbing year-after-year.
According to the latest report from Home Media Magazine via Blu-ray.com, the total revenue for BD increased up to 119.47% from same time last year. The report also indicates that DVD took a sizable plunge down by 13.10% year-on-year. This definitely shows that BD is making a sizable impact on DVDs when looking at the inverse ratio.
The DVD format was enjoying year-after-year increase in revenue up till a couple of years ago when the next gen formats came out. The report also indicates that currently BD accounts for 10.5% of total packaged-media sales revenue. This is a huge jump from the 1 to 2 percent before.
It really is encouraging to see that BD sales keep climbing despite the recession we are currently in right now. I suppose the belief that the entertainment industry is cushioned from the recession holds some merit. It will be interesting to see how BD will fare during this holiday season. Many are predicting BD players to drop into the $100 to $200 range, which would be the sweet spot for most consumers.

by the time that blu ray takes over a new format will be ready to take over blu ray. it will take years before blu ray takes over which is why the studios are holding out on releasing most of their top titles on blu ray.if you think that the world is sitting back and waiting for sony to be the sole owner of the only format available for movies on disc then think again.

@Mark,
yes thats exactly what all the studios are doing.
What do you mean by “studios holding out on releasing most of their top titles on blu ray?”
can you please elaborate on this comment as it is quite humorous.

@ Mack
I thought the BD format was owned by a consortium. If memory serves, there’s 9 businesses in it, of which Sony is one of them.

sure blu ray was developed by more than one company but sony owns the name and all the rights to the blu ray name.even though most of the new movies released are on blu ray most of the older movies are not on blu ray.movies like titanic,star wars and the older indiana jones movies.i can go on all day telling you what movies are not on blu ray but it would take too long to do it.

@Mack,
Yes… you make SO much sense, the studios are holding out on Blu-ray because they have not converted all of their old catalog movies to Blu-ray. They should also look into converting VHS, Betamax, 2″ Quad (1950’s) all into Blu-ray as well.
…because Blu-ray will flop soon and all the studios know this and all market signs and trends indicate this as well. Also all the analysts are incorrect as well as journalists because they look at numbers and facts. ;)

I don’t see it as encouraging. In fact, I see BR and DVD as a step backward, since we now have wonderful region encoding, and there are parts of a movie we can’t skip past. I will never buy any DVD or BR product.
