Blackberry releases new firmware to fix buggy Storm software
By Mike Ferro
The Blackberry Storm is RIM’s latest attempt at taking a piece of the action from Apple and its amazingly popular iPhone. For the most part the Blackberry Storm is quite solid from a construction and email perspective. However, the OS is a completely different story. The OS has been riddled with bugs and issues since day one and RIM has recently announced that new firmware will be available this Sunday.
I have been using the Storm for over a month now and I thoroughly enjoy using it. You can check out my initial impressions here. I have apps on my Storm that I use all the time such as the I Heart Radio and Google Maps. However, the biggest annoyance with the Storm is the buggy operating system.
I have found that at times the OS starts to lag, which can be frustrating. I would press a button on the touchscreen and nothing would happen. There are times when during a call, I would try to mute the call and the button would not execute. There are also times where the camera would activate while I am tying an email. It seems to happen when I hover over a button for a long time.
According to Information Week, it seems like RIM is finally doing something about it as a Verizon Wireless spokesperson recently indicated that a new firmware will be released this Sunday. The firmware version 4.7.0.148 is supposed to make the Storm’s UI more stable. Apparently the firmware will fix issues with Storm re-starting randomly and reduce lag.
The lock/unlock issue should also be fixed along with the laggy camera. With any new CE device as complex as the Storm, it is to be expected that it will ship with many bugs. The iPhone was heavy with bugs when it was first launched as well. The best feature of the Storm that I can’t complain about is its email push capability along with the ability to view pretty much any attachment. The firmware update can be downloaded via the usual methods this Sunday.

Seriously Mike, you’ve used Storm for a month and not tried out the leaked firmwares? Wow, that’s incredible for someone so tech savvy.
