When Michael Jackson’s death was broken first by a celebrity gossip blog, I and many others considered this a sign of things to come, with the Internet taking over from traditional media and news organizations. But while speed and timing is one thing, legitimacy and trustworthiness are another. On that score, traditional media still rules.

Students at the University of Michigan used Z Corporations 3D printing and scanning technology to design and test Infinium, their solar car. Infinium is this year’s student solar car entry in the upcoming World Solar Challenge in Australia.

The National Intelligence Service (NIS) of South Korea has launched a Flash game to teach young people about the dangers of North Korean spies. Subjects of the indoctrination are eligible for prizes like a laptop or a total frontal lobotomy.

Dow Chemical Company and Algenol Biofuels are working together to create a biorefinery that uses algae to convert carbon dioxide (CO2) to ethanol. Dow, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) and Membrane Technology & Research, Inc. will be providing science and technology to Algenol’s algae system. The plan is to locate the facility at Dow’s Freeport, Texas site.

In a bizarre, self-inflicted assault on Wikipedia’s credibility, Founder Jimmy Wales has actively prevented information about an American journalist kidnapped by the Taliban from appearing on the site. Now Wikipedia is not only behind traditional media in terms of authority, but also timeliness.

Prior to the official announcement that Michael Jackson was dead, there was a flurry of rumors going across the Web causing much confusion. Many sites were reporting that Michael Jackson was in a state of deep coma while others were reporting of his passing. It has been found that devious hackers have taken advantage of this confusion by leveraging virus and spam attacks disguised as Michael Jackson information.

Recently representatives from Microsoft and Google duked it out at the Structure 09 Conference. The two sides discussed some of the challenges as well as approaches to honing in on infrastructure performance. One of the claims made from Google is that the company practices a more absolute cloud computing implementation than Microsoft.

Automobiles will likely never be 100 percent safe, unless flying cars and auto-pilot controls become standard in the future. Which could be a long way off. But there are ways of reducing the risks to drivers, passengers, other road users, and pedestrians. No driving while drunk is one already enforced, banning texting while driving is surely another.
