Sony Ericsson wears its GreenHeart on its sleeve
By Dave Jeyes
Sony Ericsson is launching its new GreenHeart initiative, pushing to make mobile devices more eco-friendly. The new C901 GreenHeart and the Naite are made to draw less power, use recycled plastic and come with a built-in electronic user manual.
These first two phones from the GreenHeart program have a 15 percent smaller carbon footprint than previous models. This takes into account materials, shipping and electricity over the life of the phones.
By eliminating the need for a paper manual, Sony cut out 90 percent of its paper. This move also allowed for smaller packaging and reduced shipping costs.
C901 GreenHeart
The C901 GreenHeart is made for the socially conscious shutterbug with a 5 megapixel camera, built-in Xenon flash and SmileShutter technology. This technology autofocuses using face detection, then automatically snaps smiling pictures.
The C901 is made of a minimum of 50 percent recycled plastics and comes with the MH300 GreenHeart headset. The MH300 is built from 100 percent recycled plastics in four out of five parts.
You can also view pictures and multimedia on the C901’s 240×320 pixel color screen. The C901 GreenHeart comes in the Ocean White color you see below.

Naite
The Naite will come with one of the first low-power chargers on the market. This helps to reduce the amount of power used over the entire life of the device.
The Naite comes with a 2 megapixel camera with 2.5x digital zoom. It also has multimedia capability and an electronic user manual just like the C901.

The GreenHeart Initiative
Sony Ericsson has launched a blog about its new GreenHeart initiative along with the release of these first two phones. The company is also holding a webcast that you can tune into live right now. The webcast started at 1:00 PM GMT and users can ask questions live.
These aren’t the first eco-friendly phones on the market, but Sony Ericsson really seems to be putting some effort into the initiative. Hopefully this will lead to further advances into environmentally-responsible consumer electronics.
