Poo Free Parks takes green to a new level
By now most dog owners know to carry plastic bags with them whenever they walk their dogs. Picking up smelly excrement keeps sidewalks, streets and parks pleasant to visit. A company called Poo Free Parks is stepping in with the equipment needed to properly clean up after your dog should you forget your handy bag.
Poo Free Parks is based in Denver and has signed contracts with the city and county of Denver to provide its equipment and services at 200 different sites. The equipment that will be installed is actually a 100 percent recyclable aluminum plastic bag dispenser. Placing your pooches poop in a bag not only cleans up local parks but keeps the poop from winding up in local waterways and water sources.
The bags that the dispenser will provide are 100 percent biodegradable. As a matter of fact the bags are designed to biodegrade within 18 months. Of course placing the biodegradable poo bag in a larger non biodegradable garbage bag will defeat the purpose. Maintenance crews for the dispensers will drive hybrid vehicles, continuing with the company’s green theme.
Although Denver has signed contracts with the company, taxpayers will not be paying for the service. Instead the equipment and service will be paid by “cause marketing”. This means essentially that businesses will be picking up the cost as a means of marketing. The businesses can claim environmental goodness by providing one or more dispensers around the city and county. Really posh establishments can keep the walkways outside of their doors clean and poo fragrant free by having a bag dispenser placed just outside as a courtesy to their customers.
The company is taking civic duty one step further. The company is working with a homeless rehabilitation facility to provide jobs for members and graduates of the program. The rehabbed homeless will be responsible for maintenance and restocking of containers not removal of poo waste.
The program is set to expand to New York and San Francisco with more cities being offered the service in the future.
Poo Free Parks is tackling the puppy poo problem by providing greener alternatives than your typical disposable sandwich bag.
