Fake Steve Jobs returns for liver transplant and Apple comeback
By Dave Parrack
Dan Lyons killed off Fake Steve Jobs and the satirical blog, The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs, last July when he secured a new job writing for Newsweek. Now, a year on, and in light of the real Steve Jobs having a liver transplant and making a comeback at Apple, Fake Steve Jobs has returned. As funny as ever.
The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs made a huge splash when Dan Lyons started writing it in 2006. Although no one actually knew Dan Lyons was behind it at the time. Written in the style of the real Steve Jobs, just with an added slice of acerbic wit and biting commentary, Fake Steve Jobs gained lots of fans, the real Steve Jobs included.
Lyons’s identity was finally unveiled in August 2007, but he carried on writing the blog for almost a year afterwards. Until he secured new employment and decided to walk away from the blog. The fact that the real Steve Jobs was the subject of unending speculation as to his health surely also played a part.
But now, as a response to Steve Jobs returning to the fold at Apple after having undergone a liver transplant, Lyons has resurrected the blog. Fake Steve Jobs returned on June 18 with a one line post stating, “Feeling … Strange. Am I … In Heaven?” And there has since been daily posts, all concerning the coverage of Jobs’s liver transplant and return to work. Also known as Livergate.
Lyons has already joked about Jobs taking half the liver of The New York Times writer David Pogue, and complained about the coverage of the real transplant in The New York Times. Clearly not a fan of that esteemed organ then, but I’m sure he loves The Wall Street Journal, the publication which did break the news.
It’s great to see the return of Fake Steve Jobs, even if it is only a temporary return to cover a huge story in the life of the real Steve Jobs. More than anything, it signifies Lyons is confident enough that Jobs isn’t going to be heading for an early grave anytime soon.
