Grey’s Anatomy is first ABC show to arrive on Hulu
By Sean P. Aune
The fruits of the ABC investment into Hulu are finally appearing with the addition of Grey’s Anatomy to the popular video site.
It was announced in April that The Walt Disney Company had become an equity shareholder in the video site Hulu, but since then everything has been quiet. There were many promises of how this would add not only content from Disney’s ABC division to the site, but also feature-length Walt Disney movies. As time passed none of this materialized, and most people forgot the deal had even been made.
Flash forward to the evening of July 5, and Hulu finally announced it was adding the hit ABC drama Grey’s Anatomy to the site.
For the time being only five episodes of the series have been added, but Hulu is promising that more content is coming during its Hulu Days of Summer promotion where they are adding new content every day. While other shows have been added already during the promotion, Grey’s Anatomy was the first from the deal with The Walt Disney Company, and TechCrunch is reporting that other shows expected to be added in the near future include Desperate Housewives, I Survived a Japanese Game Show, the cult hit Scrubs and Ugly Betty.
Hulu saw a major upswing in visitors after its large Super Bowl ad push with Alec Baldwin as an alien, but that boost only lasted so long and the numbers have started to decrease again. While some are saying that this is due to declining interest or other assorted nit picks, I would suggest it’s because we are between television seasons at the moment in the United States. If the numbers are still down in the fall when new episodes start appearing, then people can worry about the future of the site, but during the summer months I wouldn’t get to worked up about it.
