MySpace to launch email service this week
By Sean P. Aune
Reports indicate that MySpace may be launching its own email service this week.
According to paidContent, sources have revealed that MySpace will be launching its own email service this week in what is described as being in a “soft and low-key” manner. A full roll out would happen some time before the end of the year, but no definitive date details were disclosed.
While MySpace still boasts 130 million users world-wide, 70 million of those being in the United States, a recent study by Anderson Analytics showed that users of the former top social networking site were using it less than they were six months ago. Facebook on the other hand continues to grow and has passed the 250 million user mark just last week.
If these reports turn out to be true, this could be a move by MySpace to not only increase the amount of time each user spends on the site, but also an attempt to get old users to return and to get the company name out there again before the masses in a low-cost fashion. Imagine the number of brand impressions that will be created when people begin telling their friends to email them at “yourname@myspace.com”. People that have not thought about visiting their old accounts in months, if not years, may be motivated to do so again when they see the name popping up everywhere.
There is no word as of yet if this service will be limited to the users in the USA or if it will be global. There is also no indication if you will be able to use your existing vanity URLs with the company as your address. This would only make sense to roll those chosen user names over to the email addresses, but we’ve heard of sillier decisions before.
