Using HEPO filters saves money and the environment

July 23, 2009

Using HEPO filters saves money and the environment No that is not a typo.  It is HEPO and not HEPA.  HEPA filters are used in a variety of products like air filters and vacuum cleaners.  HEPO filters are used for trucks.  Specifically, HEPO filters are used to clean engine oil which in turn cleans the engine.  By using these filters, truck engines don’t wear out as quickly and don’t require as many oil changes.

HEPO Filters are not only products but the name of the company that makes a Micro-Bypass Oil Filtration System (MBOFS) for everything from pickup trucks to 18 wheelers.  The system is an add on system that doesn’t interfere with the normal flow of oil through the engine.

HEPO filter and illustration The HEPO MBOFS can be added on to any truck.  The system itself is comprised of a housing that contains a perforated center tube wound “with a specially blended yarn of cotton and cellulose in a precise diagonal pattern.”  The filter works by:

The HEPO element features many hundreds of identical, tapered (decreasing in size), spiral passageways that trap successively smaller particles as oil flows inward toward the center core.

According to California Green Solutions, HEPO filters save the trucking industry money in several ways.  First, filtering the oil, extends the useful life of the oil.  Second, filtering particulates out of the oil also cut down on wear and tear of the engine and keep the engine cleaner.  Third, vehicle life is extended because the engines don’t wear out as fast.  Fourth, fuel costs are lower and lastly, “saving significant, but hard-to-track downtime costs.”

Environmentally, the MBOFS means that less oil is disposed of.  Although there are companies that will recycle waste oil, 500 million gallons are not recycled.  Also 40 percent of the pollution to land and waterways is caused by oil dumping.  The EPA says that water polluted by waste oil has terrible consequences if drunk.  Ingesting polluted water can lead to central nervous system and/or kidney failure if drunk for only a short time and liver, kidney or skin cancer if drunk over a long time.

Aggregate Industries has been using HEPO Filters MBOFS for the past year in Illinois, Indiana, South Carolina and Colorado as a pilot program.  The system was able to cut oil consumption by 3,366 gallons and reduced oil changes by two-thirds.  Engine wear was reduced by 90 percent.  The filters also cut down on the vehicle emissions reducing the companies carbon footprint.

Using the HEPO Filters MBOFS system helped Aggregate Industries save quite a bit of money on vehicle maintenance, repair, and replacement while helping the environment.

As President Obama might say, “if a simple add-on filter can save your engine while saving you money, why not do it.”
