Smith Electric cuts air pollution with electric trucks

By Susan Wilson

Smith Electric cuts air pollution with electric cars When you think of electric vehicles you might envision Tesla’s sports car or other electric cars.  But Smith Electric Vehicles makes electric trucks, big electric trucks.  If you want an electric pick-up truck, check out future Ford and GM products.  If you want a large electric commercial vehicle, go to Smith Electric.

According to Moving Cooler, a transportation study released today, cutting vehicle transmissions is crucial for meeting the goals in the new climate bill.  The study was commissioned by:

… a diverse group of stakeholders representing environmental action groups, transportation experts, industry, federal agencies, trade associations, and leading foundations. They include the: American Public Transportation Association, Environmental Defense Fund, Environmental Protection Agency, Federal Highway Administration, Federal Transit Administration, Intelligent Transportation Society of America, Kresge Foundation, Natural Resources Defense Council, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Rockefeller Foundation, Shell, Surdna Foundation, Funders Network for Smart Growth, and the Urban Land Institute.

In keeping with the report’s finding, Smith Electric Vehicles delivered electric trucks to six Fortune 500 companies:  Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Coca Cola, Staples, AT&T, Frito Lay, and Kansas City Power and Light.  Each company took delivery of the Smith Newton, the largest road going electric truck in America.

Smith Electric Vehicles, produces five different truck models ranging in size from the 2.3 ton Ampere to the 12 ton Newton.  The trucks all utilize Lithium-ion battery technology.  The Newton has a 120 kw electric motor with a top speed of 50 mph and a range of 100 miles on a full charge.  The trucks take 8 hours to charge and have absolutely no emissions.  These aren’t long haul trucks but even with the 100 mile limit, they should be able to cut down significantly on greenhouse emissions.

Every method of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles will have to be implemented in order to meet the new Climate Bill goals.  Smith electric trucks take emissions reduction to a new level.  Rather than simply rely on new hybrids and electric cars to make the difference, company fleets composed of Smith electric trucks will have as significant if not a more significant impact on reducing air pollution.
