Google launches an incredibly easy online store with new Google Checkout feature
By Sean P. Aune
Ever wanted to start your own online store, but had no clue how to go about doing that? Well, Google just made it so insanely simple a… prehistoric person that lived in caves could do it.
There have been many barriers to people opening up ecommerce sites: How do I build it? What software do I use? Where do I host it? How do I accept payments? The list of questions has been pretty much endless, but thanks to some new innovations from Google, the doors to the wonderful world of selling products online have been thrown open to absolutely anyone with access to a computer.
Google announced via the Google Docs blog that essentially anyone with a Google account can now become an online retailer in just three steps.
1. Sign up for Google Checkout
2. List products you want to sell in a Google spreadsheet
3. Place the Google Checkout store gadget on your Web site. (Also supported: Google Sites, Blogger, and iGoogle).
Even if you do not currently have a Web site, all one needs to do is sign up for a free account at Blogger, a blog service owned by Google, and you have the platform to run your new online store.
Why is all of this significant? Well, up until now it was a major pain to decide how and where to run an online store. Even if you used a free shopping cart system like osCommerce, it was still fairly technical and you had to find a Web host to run it on, costing you at least a few dollars a month. It was also overkill if you only had a few items to sell, like people that make crafts at home. Sure you had solutions like eBay, but its traffic has been dropping significantly lately, and sellers have become more and more disenchanted with the continually unfriendly new rules that the site keeps implementing.
While anyone that opens one of these new stores is still going to have to fight to gain traffic in the ever increasingly crowded world of the Internet, this could still be a heck of a nice add-on for those people who already have a presence on the Web. Already have a blog? Have a few trinkets you want to sell? Why not open a Google Checkout store and give it a try?
