Apple updates the iProd, and still no one knows what it is

By Sean P. Aune

New Apple Tablet rumors point to possible trouble for the Amazon Kindle IProd users rejoice!  Apple just updated your product!  Now … would you mind telling the rest of us what the heck it is?

It seems that Ars Technica was digging around in the iPhone OS 3.1 Software Development Kit (SDK) beta recently (those kids sure know how to party over there), and discovered that a mystery product that was in the last version was not only still there, but it had received an update!  The mysterious product, only referred to as “iProd”, was referred to as “iProd0,1″ in the last release, but it is now being listed as “iProd1,1″.  So … um … congratulations iProd team on reaching another milestone?

All kidding aside, this is not an unusual way for new Apple products or system updates to get discovered.  It has happened with various versions of the iPhone and iPod Touch, so it isn’t surprising that something is lurking in the SDK for 3.1, but what is it?  The first guess by just about every one under the sun is thinking that this is the long rumored Apple Tablet, and we are inclined to agree with them.

There has been a ton of speculation as to if this Apple Tablet would run Mac OS X or the iPhone OS.  The general belief was that it would be difficult for it to run the iPhone OS due to the fact it is a 10-inch screen – which even that ‘fact’ is speculation at this point because it isn’t even confirmed this item exists yet – and that it would be difficult to upscale the existing graphics for applications to a screen of that size without pixelating the heck out of them.

At this point it is all speculation, just like it always is with every new Apple product due to the company mantra of complete secrecy over new products.  All the ‘iProd’ does is tell us that something, whatever it may be, is being worked on, but we still have no clue what exactly it is.  We’ve posted the image Ars Technica took of the screen that shows the mystery product in the SDK for you below.  Thoughts?

OBVIOUSLY this is their soon to be announced product that let’s you play music and when you poke someone with it they involuntarily start dancing to the tune for a user selectable number of seconds. Time to get more traditional Irish jigs loaded up to iTunes eh???!!! ;)
Only time will tell though if it has a speaker so that your victim can also hear the song…how much fun will it be if you only go around prodding yourself?!?

It is a Wii FIT kind of device which acts as your Bitchy Personal Trainer (that’s why the name iProd). Apple terms it (according to their published Patents) as a lifestyle companion device.
