Piper Jaffray analyst predicts Apple will make $1.2 billion in the first year from the Apple Tablet Although no one knows 100 percent for sure the Apple Tablet is even a reality yet, that isn’t stopping one analyst from making some predictions as to how much he think it will make in the first year of release.

It isn’t unusual for analysts to make big predictions about how much revenue a product could make for a company, but sometimes you have to giggle a little bit when they do it for products that aren’t even confirmed to exist.

The Apple Tablet may be the worst kept secret in the history of Apple.  Every one knows it’s coming, heck, we’re even pretty sure we know when, and it appears that developers are working on it via the iPhone OS 3.1 SDK (Software Development Kit).  As is normal operating procedure for Apple, the company is  is remaining completely mute on the subject, but that doesn’t stop people like Gene Munster, a senior analyst for Piper Jaffray, from making some predictions about what kind of revenue it will generate in its first year of release.

Mr. Munster says he has spoken with component makers in Asia, and it appears the device won’t be released until early 2010 – which has been the prevailing thought anyway – but he says that he has gleaned some other information about what exactly the tablet does, and how it operates.

  • Be similar to an iPod touch, only larger, capable of running most of the 70,000 applications on the iPhone App Store plus a new category of apps designed for the bigger screen.
  • Will be used primarily for Web surfing, e-mail, and digital media, competing with netbooks without being a netbook.
  • Will be priced between an iPhone and a MacBook — between $500 and $700.
  • Is likely to include a 3G cellular modem and could be subsidized by a carrier — either AT&T or Verizon.
  • Will sell better than Apple TV did its first year (1.2 million units).
  • Could in fact sell 2 million units at $600 each to generate $1.2 billion and add about 3% to Apple’s revenue stream in calendar 2010.

No one is sure when Apple will finally unveil the device, although most think it will be at the usual iPod press event in September.  Until such time as Apple makes this device official, this is all speculation, but it sure is fun to dream about it.
