Survey finds that iPhone users sure do love their apps
It would seem that iPhone users spend an awful lot of time downloading applications, something that really shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.
According to a recent survey by Compete, iPhone users are application junkies compared to the rest of the smartphone market. According to this study, a full 60 percent of iPhone users say they have downloaded ten or more applications to their device. This really isn’t that shocking seeing as most people download that many applications in their first day with the phone, but what is surprising is how iPhone users stack up against other smartphone users.
This is how the two different sets of users break down on the number of applications downloaded:
iPhone Users
- 0 Apps – 3%
- 1 – 5 Apps – 15%
- 6 – 10 Apps – 22%
- 11 – 15 Apps – 15%
- 16 – 20 Apps – 18%
- 21 – 30 Apps – 10%
- 31+ Apps – 17%
Other Smartphone Users
- 0 Apps – 27%
- 1 – 5 Apps – 44%
- 6 – 10 Apps – 14%
- 11 – 15 Apps – 5%
- 16 – 20 Apps – 4%
- 21 – 30 Apps – 4%
- 31+ Apps – 4%
While it’s true that no one has developed an application culture quite like the one Apple has, the numbers are still skewed so heavily in the iPhone’s favor that you have to wonder if there aren’t some other factors involved.
While Reserach In Motion’s (RIM) BlackBerry line is still hugely popular as a phone, the App World for easier downloading of apps was slow to come out. (speaking as a BlackBerry user, it’s also somewhat clunky to navigate) That isn’t to say there aren’t good apps for the BlackBerry, they just seem to be harder to find.
There is also a very different culture around most smartphones that aren’t the iPhone. BlackBerrys have a reputation for being all about business, and apps just don’t seem to lend themselves to that. Apple made a very pointed comment this week at their iPod event about how the iPod Touch, the phone-less cousin to the iPhone, is like carrying a computer in your pocket. Well, carrying a BlackBerry is more about it being a communication device than a computer, so how many applications do you really need?

I have at LEAST 20 apps on my BlackBerry Tour, not counting at least that many themes.
That said, how many of those iPhone apps are the $.99 crapware that proliferates? A very high percentage no doubt.
