Google crop circles logo adds to ‘Unexplained Phenomenon’ mystery

Google crop circles logo adds to 'Unexplained Phenomenon' mysteryGoogle is either playing us all for fools, building up to some huge announcement, or has been taken over by aliens. One of those is surely the only possible explanation to the messing around with the Google logo doodle on the Google Search homepage. Last time it was a UFO stealing the second O in Google, and this time it’s crop circles forming the word “Google” with the L formed by a tractor. What the hell does it all mean?

On Sept. 5, Google changed the logo doodle on its homepage to one showing a UFO tractor beaming the second O from Google away. Clicking on the logo took you to a search for ‘Unexplained Phenomenon’. Which was all very strange because the Google logo is normally changed to signify a national holiday or famous event from history. This was a little more obscure.

The mystery was added to by a tweet on Google’s official Twitter page with a code which translated to “All your O are belong to us.” Various theories were put forward as to what Google was up to but none really stood up to scrutiny.

Now, Google has done it again, with a new logo showing crop circles forming the word Google. Clicking on it takes you to a search for ‘Crop Circles’. For the uninitiated, crop circles are mysterious patterns which appear overnight in fields around the world but mainly the U.K. Many are hoaxes, being made by people with nothing better to do. But many are complicated patterns which remain unexplained, with theories ranging from alien involvement to ley lines.

The crop circles logo was accompanied by a new tweet reading “51.327629, -0.5616088.” This is a set of coordinates which lands you right at the center of Horsell in Surrey, England. Which despite being only a small town is famous for being the site of the initial invasion of the Martians in H.G. Wells’ War Of The Worlds. Wells would be 143-years-old on Sept. 21.

The mystery continues, and there is still no explanation forthcoming from the search giant as to the nature of these logo changes. I very much doubt it’s a prank because that would only make sense on April 1. Which leaves this either being a teaser for some big announcement forthcoming or an admission that Google is now run by non-humans.

Or it could, of course, merely be a viral marketing campaign to get people visiting and talking about Google. In which case it’s working. What are the odds on another round of this strangeness on Sept. 25?

I love how if Google does anything, even just increasing the size of the search bar by pixels, the world goes into a frenzy and starts digging really deep.

Google are probably laughing like crazy. I’m in favor of viral, but it could be more. I’m sure we will know soon.

It is fascinating how these memes can take life and points to the very real danger that something far less fun and frivolous than this might one day spread on the Internet. This story really has taken hold of the public imagination (probably hundreds of posts out there and most major news sites picking up on it.) With H.G Wells worked into this story, we can add to the plot the Martians, who have a real reputation for mayhem, beginning back in 1938 with the Orson Welles War of the Worlds broadcast. Theres a potent brew available to a really determined social engineer to create a meme that could do real damage to health and sanity. The Welles broadcast was not the only one to get out of hand. Better watch out that someone doesnt wage a new war of the worlds one day on the Internet.

Maybe with the recent announcements that Bing is at a 10% share…Google needed that extra boost.

Likely it was simply a publicity stunt to get more people to Google…it worked…
