Twitter seems to be having a few problems holding on to its celebrity Tweeters of late. Lily Allen and Miley Cyrus have both quit recently, and Stephen Fry may be about to add his name to this list of Twitter quitters. The problem is that getting up close and personal with fans isn’t always a positive experience.

One of the most annoying things about Facebook is the amount of spammers attacking the social media site. As popularity in social communities rise, spammers have started to target these sites aggressively. One online marketer recently got slammed with a hefty suit awarding Facebook $711 million in damages.

Google has, for almost the whole of October, been experimenting with a new minimalist homepage, which gets rid of everything but the Google logo and the search box. Not everyone will have yet seen the test site though many have. The level of minimalism and wording on display seems to have varied considerably. But what, ultimately, is the point? Is this a pointless exercise that is confusing users?

The average Web user is a savvy individual who tends to err on the side of caution when surfing, sticking to trustworthy sites and only opening attachments to files they know are safe. But links are a different matter, especially if they are shortened into the random jumble of letters and numbers which populate social networking sites these days. Luckily, the spammers and scammers don’t have it all their own way.

Amazon has launched a Web payments scheme that allows shoppers to use a memorable phrase and a PIN code in place of a user name and password. It seems utterly pointless, particularly given the lack of participating sites.

Just a couple of decade ago, the only way to have a wealth of information available at your fingertips was to purchase a costly and bulky set of encyclopedias. These could take up a whole bookshelf and cost a month’s wages. Now, the Internet offers that wealth of information in the form of Wikipedia. And the WikiReader brings Wikipedia to your pocket for under $100.
