Acer introduces its first touch notebook

Acer introduces its first touch notebook The Acer Aspire AS5738PG might have a name that’s hard to remember, but it’s memorable in that it’s Acer’s first touch-enabled notebook. The new addition to the Aspire line will take advantage of the full multi-touch capability of Windows 7.

Baked into the Aspire AS5738PG is a full 15.6-inch HD LED monitor that allows users to use gestures such as pinching to zoom and turning pages right on the monitor. While touch laptops are far from tried and true, Microsoft is banking on customers adopting the new way to interface with their systems.

This Aspire also comes with HDMI out and Dolby 5.1 surround sound for excellent multimedia capability. This may be overkill as most people are unlikely to use their laptop as a home entertainment system and DVR, but at least it makes for a good viewing experience.

The touch notebook from Aspire also has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor that clocks in at 2.2 GHz and has 4 GB of DDR2 RAM. Combined with a 320 GB SATA hard drive, this notebook should be quick and responsive.

Now that Windows 7 is about to get its official release, we can expect to see other models from major hardware players. The AS5738PG  is coming in at $799.99 list price, but we may see less expensive touch notebooks in the near future.

Apple revolutionized the smartphone market by implementing a really great multi-touch experience in the iPhone and iPod Touch. However nobody’s quite sure whether the new mode of interfacing with our laptops and desktops will catch on.

Mike Arrington of TechCrunch notes the awkward experience of testing out a touch-enabled monitor on his desktop experience. His take is that desktops would need to change their form factor to mimic a drafting table in order to be comfortable to use for long periods.
