You have to ask WHY people do stupid stuff like this? Well, pretty simple really. The targets you mention as targets of these pranks are despicable to a large enough group to achieve viral spread, and those doing it KNOW that people are stupid enough to click through to malware/botware web sites because of their hatread of certain names like Miley or Kanye. They prey on the base reponse of many, and the proliferation of URL shortening makes it easy from them to redirect you to the nether regions of the internet.

There was an amusing unintentional incident along these lines a few weeks ago. Bob Barker appeared as a guest host on wrestling show RAW, causing him to become a trending topic on Twitter. Non-wrestling fans saw this and, given his age, assumed he was getting mentioned so much because he’d passed away, which then created so many comments that RIP Bob Barker became a trending topic.
