Rumors of the Apple tablet spin up again as Apple denies
Rumors that Apple is working on some form of tablet computer have begun to pick up speed again, but even Apple is saying that there won’t be any more new products this year.
The saga of the Apple Tablet has turned into something akin to a murder mystery on a soap opera: every time you think the trail has gone cold, some new piece of evidence pops up and gets you all enthralled with the storyline again. Such is the saga of this tablet that Apple refuses to comment on, but yet everyone and their brother insists it exists.
The whole firestorm got new life breathed into it when a video of New York Times executive editor Bill Keller making a speech to the staff was posted by the Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard. While the speech was about the future of print media, and how it should embrace the digital age, Mr. Keller listed off all of the platforms they were going to have to consider dealing with. At the 8:30 mark in the video, he said the words “the impending Apple slate …”, and it was off to the races again for everyone that the Apple tablet was happening for sure.
It is amazing how four little words can send the tech blogosphere in to a tizzy, but that is exactly what it has done. Peter Kafka over at All Things D spent an entire column trying to decipher the possible ramifications of those words, even going so far as to call Mr. Keller and ask if he had had talks about such a device. Mr. Keller’s response was, “I ain’t sayin’.”
Just as that begins to calm down, The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the tablet has been discussed in Australia with Fairfax Media’s director of marketing and newspaper sales, Robert Whitehead. I take it back, this isn’t a murder mystery, it’s a 21st century version of the computer game, “Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?”
Wonder as we all might, Apple Vice-President Phil Schiller rained on the parade when he told Gizmodo after the iMac announcement last week that there wouldn’t be any more new products this year. Of course this won’t stop the rampant speculation, but would we all be having fun if it did?
