Apple Tablet may be mostly about video instead of books

Apple Tablet may be mostly about video instead of booksAt this point in the Apple Tablet rumor cycle, people are trying to glean whatever information they can, and if that means reading between the lines of what Apple executives say, so be it.

The Apple Tablet rumor mill is an unstoppable juggernaut at this point, and it wouldn’t surprise us if some people haven’t moved on to reading tea leaves to discern what exactly this product is, but others are just listening very closely to what Apple executives say and don’t say.

According to CNN Money, Eddy Cue, Apple vice president for iTunes and Internet services, David Moody, Apple vice president for worldwide Mac marketing, and Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer were speaking with Mike Abramsky of RBC Capital about the future plans for the company.  While the conversation was about the Apple TV device, Mr. Abramsky summed up this bit of conversation in a report, and it may give us a hint to what Apple is looking at:

Video/Content Opportunities. After music, video content is expected to be the next “exploding” opportunity, but requires overcoming industry rights dysfunctionality, competing with subsidies (cable box, video), and developing the right consumer “offer”. Apple TV, while still a “hobby”, is well positioned to benefit from evolving market dynamics. Apple was less enthusiastic about the online book/newspaper market, given unattractive industry structure.

While this is certainly not concrete evidence, it does appear to give us a clue that the Apple Tablet will not be about being an e-reader, which many have suspected. Of course, this doesn’t preclude the idea that there won’t be some form of e-book functionality on the device, but it does appear the main thrust would be towards video.

Honestly, at this point I just won’t the device announced so we can all stop speculating. It’s going to be expensive, and we’re all going to desire it … what more do we really need to know?
