Google adding bookmark sync to its Chrome browser

November 3, 2009

Google adding bookmark sync to its Chrome browserGoogle has launched a new beta version of its Chrome browser which adds the ability to sync bookmarks across multiple computers.

One of the biggest roadblocks users have mentioned to making Google Chrome their primary Web browsing utility is the lack of bookmark synchronization.  While Mozilla’s Firefox browser never had bookmark sync as a built-in feature, there was a simple solution via an extension called Xmarks.

Google has announced via its Chrome blog that this function has now been built into the latest beta version of the browser.  Being that it is still in beta, this version is not for your average user as it isn’t considered stable yet, but from the demonstration video it looks like a pretty slick interface.  You log in to Chrome with your Google account to set up sync, and once you are at your second computer you simply follow the same process and nearly instantaneous sync is set up.

There is no word when this feature will make it in to the stable release of Chrome, but seeing as this has been one of the most talked about requests, it’s probably safe to assume it will be “soon.”

I’ll stick with Xmarks since it works across multiple browsers (IE, FF, Safari, Chrome in beta) and has a simple interface for mobile devices.

This is a very innovative step by Chrome Lab, I have exported all my bookmarks to my other computer.
Chrome is expanding its reach by adding new features in its gallery though it is far away from Firefox in terms of addons.
