Blockbuster launches video rentals on SD cards; world wonders “why”

By Sean P. Aune

Blockbuster launches video rentals on SD cards; world wonders In a desperate bid for continued relevance, Blockbuster is launching video rentals on SD cards.

According to Fast Company, the Blockbuster video rental chain is launching rental kiosks that will allow you to place DMR protected video rentals on to SD cards and then play them back on the device of your choice.  The videos will include a time stamped expiration to them that they will not play after, so there won’t be any need to return to the kiosk — cutting out a step that people who use Redbox must go through — but beyond that there appears to be no logic to this plan.

The SD plan is being promoted as a way to play videos on mobile devices, but not that many phones take SD cards.  Also, it seems you provide the SD card, and you have to wonder how many people walk around with blank SD cards on them.

At least this eliminated potentially damaged DVDs, but beyond that, this plan makes little to no sense as a true step forward.

This is the most logical step Blockbuster can take. I have been predicting this for years. I hope they also expand it to include USB memory sticks or even HDD.
