Google looking to speed up the Web with new protocol

Google looking to speed up the Web with new protocolIf Google is to be believed, by replacing the existing HTTP protocol, we could see the Web double in speed.

According to a post on the Chromium blog, Google has been running laboratory tests on a new protocol named SPDY (pronounced SPeeDY) that has seen Web site loading times increase by as much as 55 percent.  All of these tests were conducted on simulated home network connections, but it is a huge step over the current HTTP tools which have powered the Web as we know it since 1996.

Google admits it has a long way to go before its ready for real world testing, but the code is being opened up to people to review and give feedback on to hopefully speed up the process some.  For those that are interested, you just need to go to the above linked blog post and you will find all of the information you need to sign up to work on this new application.

An increase in page load time is a decrease in speed.
