Modern Warfare 2 recalled in Russia over controversy
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been recalled from all retail stores in Russia, effectively banning the game in the country.
It is being reported by Destructoid, based on a report from Russian site GotPS3, that the Russian government has ordered that Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2 be pulled from shelves due to the notorious “No Russian” airport level. Versions for computers have already received patches that remove the level from the game, and versions for the PS3 and Xbox 360 will be re-released within a month or so with the level removed from the game.
Apparently the Russian government, and even the Russian gaming community, was offended by the level depicting Russians as terrorists that attack an airport. The feelings were that the game unfairly depicted Russians as the enemies in the game, however if you play through the game you discover who the true enemy is (which we won’t spoil for you), and that both the Russian and U.S. governments were manipulated into the war.
There is no word on how the game’s story will be corrected as the scene in question is pivotal to the plot, but the scene is being removed no matter what.

I’ll never cease to be amazed at how badly people, and governments, like to over-react. Mission 3 is incredibly well done and moving.
I’ll never understand why countries/special interest groups like to wail that a game unfairly portrays them, as if anyone is going to derive their opinion of a country/group based on the actions of a people in a video game.
