Palm may have finally stopped the iTunes/webOS war

Palm may have finally stopped the iTunes/webOS warA new update has gone out for Palm’s webOS, and for once it does not include iTunes syncing.

Ever since Palm released the Palm Pre, the company has been touting the fact you could sync the phone with your iTunes library.  This wasn’t something Apple was overly fond of, so they closed the method by which Palm had achieved this.  Palm fired back with a webOS (the operating system the phone runs on)  update that brought the feature back to life, and again Apple closed the door.  This has been going on, back and forth, for months now.

With the last update to iTunes, the door was once again shut on Palm, and while everyone figured the battle would continue, it appears that Palm has thrown in the towel for now.  According to Network World, webOS 1.3.1 has been released, and iTunes support is missing this time around.

Does this mean Palm is giving up for good?  Only time will tell, but it had to be getting tiresome going back and forth like that.

I think too big a deal is made out of iTunes compatibility. I think Palm should focus on adult professionals who would take advantage of both business and entertainment features of the phone. You can play MP3′s on this phone with a stereo Bluetooth headphones (which you can’t do with iPhone). You can download MP3′s with the phone or grab them from your computer. Don’t need stupid iTunes.

There are third party options that allow iTunes syncing to the Pre (and, I believe, other mp3 players). Perhaps Palm will simply license one of those instead of continuing to tweak webOS.

Either way, as a Pre user it does not impact me. I’d never allow iTunes on my machine.

Palm should have a chat with Microsoft and see if they can’t license the zune software – the latest version runs rings around the crapware that is Itunes

    A) upgrade any DRM’d iTunes music to non-DRM’d
    B) export your music
    C) dump iTunes

    From my BlackBerry Storm…
