Could an iPod Touch with a camera be coming in the spring?
The Apple rumor mill is spinning up again, but this time it is for something we were all fairly sure was happening last September.
One of the big rumors leading up to the iPod event this past September was the the iPod Touch would be receiving a camera like the iPhone has. Well, the event came and went, and there was no mention of a camera. When various iPod sites tore apart the third generation Touch, they did find a space for the camera to go, but Apple said nothing about it as is its usual policy. The rumor was that the camera was pulled out at the last minute due to quality control, but as with all Apple rumors, you take it with a grain of salt.
Now the Examiner is reporting that it has talked with an “inside source” says that quality control was indeed the case, and that an iPod Touch with a camera is indeed coming out this spring. The source went on to say it would be the same camera as the current iPod Nano which means it will be able to shoot video, but not take still photos.
While some Apple rumor sites are saying this sounds legit, there is one major problem with it in my eyes: the release date. It is well known that September is “new iPod month”, so either Apple is going to remove the Touch from the normal release cycle, which seems highly unlikely, or it is going to end up angering two groups of customers. The first group would be those who have snapped up an iPod Touch 3rd Gen since September, only to find the 3.5 Gen has the camera. The second group would be the buyers of the camera-enabled device itself if a 4th Gen Touch would be introduced in September with the rest of the line.
The camera is inevitable at this point, but a spring release seems a bit iffy to me.
